POLITICIANS should do more to save small businesses.
That was the message from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) as it launched its Keep Trade Local campaign in a bid to highlight the current state of independent trading.
The business organisation wants to protect small businesses from excessive bureaucracy, unrealistic planning laws and severe parking restrictions in town centres.
The campaign is also looking at the importance of finance, transport and crime.
FSB Reading and West Berkshire branch chairman Brian Eastman said: “Small businesses are the backbone of local communities and we are glad to see some of our local councils starting to recognise this in their policies, but much more needs to be done.
“Planning decisions that benefit supermarkets and out of town retail parks, town centre parking restrictions and the closure of thousands of post offices are contributing to the closure of many small shops every year.
“We believe local government in England could be doing much more to safeguard the future of small businesses.”
