Bus boss James Freeman was travelling on the 7.39 am peak time journey which was caught up in heavy traffic on the A4.

Mr Freeman, chief executive officer of Newbury Buses, was quick to spot a longer-term solution to the traffic congestion facing the 102 service.

The bus at the time of his travel was full of early morning passengers anxious to get to work, so he decided ‘why not divert these key journeys to the bus gate specially laid out and designed for the purpose?’

The Reading Buses Premier Routes 25/26 already use the bus gate in the Chase and this is exactly what is now happening with the Newbury Buses’ 102 service.

Mr Freeman said: “The big advantage is that 102 buses on the peak time journeys leaving Reading at 7.39 am, 8.09 am and 8.39 am – which carry a lot of people travelling to Arlington Business Park at Theale – are now getting a more reliable journey with fewer delays.

“Buses now pick up at stops along the diverted route with the bus gate itself making the three half hourly peak time journeys between Reading and Newbury much more dependable than in the past.”

He added that it was only the three peak time journeys which are being diverted off the main A4.  The remaining 102s stay on the main road.
