News that Market Street could re-open next week has been greeted with relief by Newbury Buses.

The cost to Newbury Buses of the road closure outside the bus station is estimated at £30,000 a month.

Chief Executive Officer James Freeman said the figure was made up of extra operating costs and reduced patronage.“It is likely that the lengthy disruption will have done permanent damage to the Newbury Buses network in terms of lost passengers”, said Mr. Freeman. He confirmed that the company was pursuing a claim for compensation against Thames Water.Said Mr. Freeman: “The weeks of work which have closed Market Street has had a ‘crippling’ effect both in terms of cost and inconvenience.

“We have suffered considerable damage to the viability of local bus services. For the road closure has not only been costly to us in terms of lost revenue, but we have suffered from not being able to deliver a convenient local service,” he added.
