Entries invited for run through the heart of Newbury
FOR the first time in over 10 years, Bayer plc, the locally-based HealthCare and Science company, in partnership with the Newbury Athletic Club, is proud to announce the return of a 10K road race to the heart of Newbury.
This year’s inaugural race takes place on Sunday, June 1, starting in the town centre and looping out to the west beyond the A34. Over 200 runners are expected, along with friends and family, race officials and marshals, all of whom will bring yet more life into the town centre, which will already be buzzing with its Farmers’ Market.
The Bayer Newbury 10K will start and finish in Northbrook Street. There is a gentle climb for the first couple of miles, but after that the route is flat all the way back through Speen Lane over the A4 crossing the Newbury Bypass, continuing on Moor Lane then crossing back towards the town before running along West Mills, passing the railway line and heading into Enborne Road and Bartholomew Street.
Those wishing to take part can find out more about the race and register via the Bayer website at www.bayer.co.uk. The enrolment deadline is Friday May 23. There will be cash prizes and trophies for the winners and medals and “goody-bags” for all participants.
“As a Healthcare company, good exercise and physical fitness are a part of our culture, and we want to share that with the local community,” said Bayer’s race organiser Andrea Postles. “We also want to make a further contribution to the community, so for every runner that enters, we will donate £2 to the local cancer charity Sail4Cancer.”
The organisation’s patron, record-breaking yachtsman Nick Moloney, is already engaged on team-building work with Bayer’s Oncology team.
Bayer has worked closely with the Newbury Athletic Club, without whose expertise and support, the event would not be possible.
Newbury AC’s road running captain and race director Tim Marsh said: “"We are delighted to be able to be offer a new race that runs right through the heart of Newbury.
“It's a nice flat course and we're hoping to attract people that are new to running as well as regulars hoping to achieve a "personal best" time.
“The race wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of Bayer - it's great to see them make such a contribution to sport in our local community. We've already had a lot of interest from people keen to run, and we're hoping that it will become an annual event.”
