Stress, take-aways and a reliance on sugar and processed foods can all contribute to the body becoming over acidic. This in turn can leave us prone to lifestyle-related health ailments, affecting our ability to work and enjoy our lives. Liz Chandler, from Natures Corner, looks at what barley grass is and why barley grass is considered nature’s own alkaliser .
To optimise wellbeing, our diet should predominantly consist of alkaline foods like green leafy vegetables, fresh seasonal fruits, pulses and nutrient rich superfoods.
For most of us this is not typical of the food we eat in a normal day. Our British cuisine of red meat, white flour and dairy products could increase the body’s acid levels to the point of ‘hyperacidity’. There is a belief that this can be responsible for fat retention as well as a heightened risk of osteoporosis. So what is the science behind this belief? Simply put, ingesting a diet high in acid forming foods can cause our body to neutralise the excess acidity with alkali salts found in our bones.
For those of us with busy lives, we may not be able to follow the strict 70 per cent alkaline to 30 per cent acid mix, required for optimum health. Barley grass can provide a good solution. It is one of the most alkaline of plant foods, neutralising excess acidity in our body. Barley grass also contains lots of chlorophyll and other essential nutrients that help to detoxify our body of toxins such as heavy metals and pollutants that we unwittingly digest every day.
Chlorophyll has anti-inflammatory properties so is great for sensitive digestive systems.
Many of the vitamins, minerals and enzymes present in barley grass act as powerful antioxidants protecting us from free radical damage, whilst enhancing our immune system and improving cardiovascular health. On top of that, barley grass is a rich source of dietary fibre which is good for colon health.
Barley grass is an amazing superfood that is easily added into smoothies and juices to give an extra WOW to our diet. It’s not a case of ‘What on earth is barley grass’ but ‘Why on earth do we do without it?’
Barley grass is high in Vitamin K. People taking Warfarin, or other anti-coagulants, should use caution when using Barley Grass and consult a GP or specialist.
