BRIMPTON-based Scion Technology & Communications recently completed the first phase of a large TV system now installed in a maximum security prison in the UK.
The first of two phases was for 284 positions with phase two due for completion by the end of the year.
Scion has also commenced the installation of another similar prison, which will have more than 750 positions and is due for completion by the end of this year. Phase one of the first project is already occupied and in full use. Scion products were chosen for operational simplicity and reliability and offer the end client full control of the TV system from any network location on the site.
Special Television connection faceplates were designed and manufactured for this application to facilitate the extra needs of a modern prison environment.
Scion Technology & Communications Limited, based at Scion Business Park on Brimpton Common, is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and exporter of products for managed TV signal distribution in high occupancy buildings. It is a family business, whose directors and shareholders, with Reuters, pioneered the use of  CAT5 computer cable for managed distribution of TV and other multimedia data  for city bank trading floors during the early 1990’s.  The company now also manufactures a wide range products for schools and hotels, hospitals and care homes, luxury yachts, ferries and cruise ships and many other market sectors including off-shore exploration platforms.
Years of experience gained in television broadcast equipment design and manufacturing preceded the family’s present business activities, which evolved with the convergence of broadcasting and computer technology.
The company has recently secured several major contracts which will be announced soon, and which include new IPTV systems designed to support wide area signal distribution.
Scion director Dave Brown said: “The prison contracts are some of the largest systems designed and installed by Scion Technology & Communications and utilise both IPTV and traditional TV over CAT5 computer cable, for which the company is internationally recognised.
“Sophisticated management software enhances the services that the prisons have to provide, while significantly reducing the staff servicing and maintenance work.”
