Apprenticeship News, with Adam Tickel, of WBTC

The Government has repeatedly stated its commitment to Apprenticeships and vocational training.
However, for many employers it can be very confusing to understand just what the government will fund. There are a number of recent developments which influence not only what can be funded but also what level of training. Therefore to help demystify the world of apprenticeship funding I have provided this simple guide
Funding for apprenticeships – a guide for employers
Who is eligible?
1. Employees who ideally work 30 hours or more per week;
2. Employees who do not already possess a degree qualification;
3. Employees who comply with UK/EU residency rules.;
What funding is available?
1 Only approved apprenticeship programmes are funded;
2. The funding goes to the apprenticeship provider to cover the cost of training;
3. The government’s priority is for 16-18 year olds;
4. The Government also funds adult Apprenticeships for those aged 19+
5. Employers are expected to make a financial contribution, especially for adult apprentices.
What added value is available?
1. Some apprenticeship providers will recruit new apprentices for you;
2. Some apprenticeship providers will run day-release programmes of training;
3. Some apprenticeship providers will provide free advice on health and safety, safeguarding and equality and diversity.
There are some changes in the pipeline in terms of funding.
n From 2013  employees aged 16-18 should be on an approved training programme.
n Adult apprenticeship funding gradually gets replaced with loans similar to that for university.
n There will be greater emphasis on advanced apprenticeships.
During difficult trading conditions it is good for employers to know that funding is available to support their business growth.
