A developing aspect of my work is what we call ‘Priority Profiles’ – in simple terms, that means identifying a business security issue, mapping out what we intend to do about it, getting on with it and then evaluating the results.

A developing aspect of my work is what we call ‘Priority Profiles’ – in simple terms, that means identifying a business security issue, mapping out what we intend to do about it, getting on with it and then evaluating the results.
The starting point is simple. Every crime – business or otherwise – has a victim, an offender and a location. Starting from these fairly obvious facts quickly leads us to work out a profile for each project.
We are very much guided by our defined targets, which I’ve mentioned before in this column:  theft of/theft from/damage to motor vehicles (at business premises), vandalism/anti-social behaviour, burglary (non-dwelling), and not forgetting criminal damage and other anti-social behaviour.
You, the business community, have helped us to define these targets, with the feedback you've given to various surveys, and existing police data.
But it’s an ongoing process, and so, as we get more and more down to brass tacks, we still need you to tell us what the problems are, and where – right down to the specifics of what might be going on in particular streets - be it vandalism, antisocial behaviour, traffic issues, whatever.
As ever, drop me an e-mail and I, along with my police colleagues, will act on it.
The Business Action Group that I work with is a specific initiative that has grown out of the Neighbourhood Policing programme. It’s still pioneering work, and my own post as business PCSO is the first and only one in the Thames Valley.
Success depends on the BAG and PCSO working closely with the Crime Reduction Advisor, Safer Communities Partnership and other agencies, including schools, planning, environmental health and the trading standards office.
And along with our targets, I see our priorities as:
n a more proactive and visible police presence
n taking more seriously the numerous “minor” crimes like vandalism, damage and anti-social behaviour in general.
n fast response and follow up when a crime has been committed
n supporting businesses with self-help advice
n ensuring local police are known to – and contactable by – local businesses.
If you are interested in making a difference to business security issues, or want to contact me about any security topics, I’m keen to hear from you. Please e-mail  me on: philip.lewis@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk.
