Welcome to this month’s column, my first as a sergeant. As I mentioned last month, I have moved from the town centre neighbourhood team onto the response team, which has broadened the area I cover, which now consists of all of West Berkshire.
First, I would like to say what a challenging month this has been, with the riots in London and elsewhere in the country. This was an unprecedented event, and I would like to mention the Thames Valley officers who helped in supporting the Metropolitan police to quell the riots and restore order. Officers conducted themselves to the highest standard under challenging conditions, and it is a credit to every officer involved that they took back control of the streets.
In regards to the potential trouble in Newbury, a combination of robust action and an increase in officers in the town centre and retail parks had the desired effect in making sure there was no trouble in West Berkshire. We reacted to the events and it shows that when Newbury police are faced with such challenges, we can rise to that and, because of our actions, there were no such incidents to businesses in West Berkshire.
I have also seen some counterfeit notes that have been seized by my officers, and I would urge all shopkeepers to check bank notes carefully, and if they suspect them to be counterfeit to call the police immediately. Suspicions should be raised if someone tries to buy a very cheap item with a high value bank note, or the note is scrunched up. If in doubt, refuse the sale, keep the note and call the police.
Finally, my team worked in the town centre on the night of the Tom Jones concert at the racecourse. There were around 26,000 people who attended, and the town centre was so busy my team had to work until 5am to deal with the sheer volume of people, supported by the town centre             neighbourhood team. Everyone was good natured, and it is good to see events in Newbury so well supported.
