Subway - a tasty deal that's not just for lunch
8th May 2008
Sandwich entrepreneur Darran Chadwick was an international project manager with Tesco when he recognised the potential of the Subway brand, during a gap year travelling around the USA, where he found himself eating in a different branch of the booming franchise every day.
He said: "When I came back from America, I was initially still working for Tesco, but I knew that Subway could work here. At that time, it was only really in London and I chose West Berkshire to launch my first branch, on the A4 in Thatcham.
"My wife and I now live in Thatcham with our son and plan to stay here. We opened our second branch, in the Kennet centre, Newbury, in June last year and in November we opened a third Subway, in the Kingsland Centre in Thatcham.
"Our bread is baked fresh in store twice a day and our cookies are baked on the premises too. Each sandwich is made to order in front of the customer, so it is no wonder we have become very popular very fast. We now employ 45 staff and are looking for managers to join our team.
"Sandwiches like ours have become much more popular as people shy away from greasy burgers. Our range includes eight low-fat sandwiches with less than six grammes of fat, tasty salad bowls and low-carb wraps too.
"Local businesses have been very impressed with our platters, which cost just £19.99 each and are ideal for meetings, although some companies simply order them as a treat for their teams. We ask for only 24 hours notice and clients can choose which of the cold sandwiches they want the platter to consist of. Each platter has five of our one-foot subs, and each of those is cut into four-inch lengths.
"Although most customers enjoy watching their sandwich being made, we take phone orders too. So long as we receive the order before midday, customers can then pop in and pick up their sub when it's convenient for them."
For Newbury Business Today readers there are exciting offers with a whopping 10 per cent off their first platter order, no matter how large the order. For friends looking for a feast after 4pm there is also a voucher offering three one-foot subs for just £9.99.
