It is Richard Mountain’s passion and genuine enthusiasm for buildings that has led him to be the successful owner of this Chartered Building Surveying business. Just over one year ago, Mr Mountain decided that it was time to take the step to start his own surveying practice. Having a long history in construction, he identified that West Berkshire was crying out for a dedicated and
reliable firm of Chartered Building Surveying professionals.
Armed with technical knowledge and experience of working for large and medium sized surveying practices, he was confident that RMA Surveyors could provide high quality, professional services. He realised he could turn his dream of establishing his own business into a reality.
Concerns about establishing a new business in a recession have receded. Richard Mountain believes that in order to achieve his goals, the risks are worth taking. If you are not prepared to take a risk, there is never a right time to start up a business.
“Just because the country is in a recession shouldn’t put off new businesses,” he said. “I think if you’re clear about your goals and expectations and you’re sure that there is a demand for your product or service, then it’s a perfect time to start a business.
“Starting any small business during a recession can be a baptism of fire, but if you can survive, you should thrive as the economy recovers.”
RMA Surveyors offers professional surveying services and construction advice, working in the residential and commercial property sectors. Though its scope is not limited to the following, it offers a variety of services, including building surveys and home buyers reports, construction projection management, party wall advice, insurance claims, reinstatement and dilapidations.

“As the saying goes ‘The greatest failure is not to try’ and I believe that RMA Surveyors is testament to that” Mr Mountain concluded. “We had a great first year of trading and in February we reached our one year milestone. In March, we moved into offices in the town centre of Newbury and in the past few months I have been a guest speaker at several business groups. I am sure the ensuing year will provide as many challenges as rewards but know that if we keep focused on our goals, the result will prove positive.”
Richard Mountain weighed up the pros and cons of establishing his own business and took the calculated risk. He has now successfully established RMA Surveyors as West Berkshire’s Building Surveyors.
