Grundon Waste Management is the largest family-owned waste management company in the UK. With its depot at Grange Lane on the Beenham Industrial Estate, Grundon is well placed to service recycling and waste collection needs throughout Newbury and the surrounding area.
The company provides a wide range of collection services for commercial and industrial customers. For example, its ever popular ‘Two Bin’ system for mixed recyclables collects all cardboard, glass bottles & jars, paper, plastic bottles, steel and aluminium cans in one bin for subsequent sorting and recycling, while a second bin takes the residual (non-recyclable) waste.
Besides enabling organisations to meet their legal obligation under the government’s ‘Pre-Treatment’ regulations, the service has significant potential for reducing costs. The greater the proportion of recyclables in a company’s total waste, the lower the volume of residual waste sent to landfill. This reduces liability for the government’s rapidly rising landfill tax, scheduled to reach £80/tonne by 2014.
Increasing the amount that you recycle helps to reduce your organisation’s carbon footprint, so too does diverting your residual waste from landfill.  As a further incentive, Grundon charges less for recycling collections than for residual waste.
Mixed recyclables are sorted at one of Grundon’s four Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs), including the facility at Grange Lane. In 2009 the Beenham plant underwent a major refit to double its capacity, including the addition of a new sorting station. As a result the MRF is also able to accept glass bottles and jars – of whatever colour – via the company’s mixed recyclables collections.
With the opening of the company’s Energy from Waste plant at Colnbrook near Slough, residual (non-recyclable) waste can now be used to generate sustainable electricity. When used in conjunction with Grundon’s mixed recyclable service, this offers environmentally-minded organisations the opportunity to divert over 95 per cent of their waste from landfill – contact the company for more details.
For organisations generating larger volumes of waste glass such as bars, pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants, Grundon’s mixed glass collections are likely to be of particular interest.
Bottles and jars of whatever colour can be placed in a single bin – there’s no need for sorting or separation by colour. Typically this system reduces the space required for bin storage and is much simpler and easier to use. Glass collected in this way is recycled into secondary aggregate for construction applications.
Many businesses still do not realise that many ‘everyday items’ encountered in the workplace are actually classed as hazardous waste and cannot be disposed of in their general waste bins. For low-volume producers of such material, Grundon has developed the ‘Haz-Box’ Service.
The company provides a lidded, red plastic box for temporary storage of the most common forms of hazardous waste found in business premises, for example adhesives, aerosols, cleaning chemicals, contaminated rags and wipes, descalers, oils, paints, resins and solvents. Collections can be arranged fortnightly, four-weekly or even quarterly. Grundon operates one of the only facilities in the UK capable of recycling the metals, the propellants and in many cases the contents of aerosol cans.
