Although there are still many high-profile – and  low-profile – exceptions, it is much more likely these days to hear of divorcing couples managing their affairs in an amicable way.
Much of this is due to the work of family lawyers who are committed to resolving disputes in a non-confrontational way.  Contrary to the perception that they are simply out to make as much money as possible, lawyers such as Lesley Clay much prefer to take the route of conciliation and cooperation.
Lesley, who is based at Hungerford solicitors Dickins Hopgood Chidley LLP, is a member of Resolution, the organisation which promotes the constructive approach for family law.
Members of Resolution must follow a code of practice in which they encourage clients to be aware of the benefits of behaving in a civilised way, to keep financial and children issues separate and emphasise the importance of being open and honest in all dealings.  Every effort is made to help clients avoid antagonism.
“I encourage people to reach an agreement at an early stage if possible,” Lesley explained. “I lay out all the options for them and explain what the likely results are. I try to be realistic.  At the same time, it’s my job to listen to them and carry out their wishes if possible.
“If the parties cannot agree, there are alternative means of resolving disputes, such as mediation, but sometimes it is inevitable that cases end up in court, which does cost money.”
One of the benefits Lesley can offer clients is her experience in other areas of the law. Before joining Dickins Hopgood Chidley, she practiced in Northern Ireland, where she advised on welfare and family law, including domestic violence, and she also ran her own practice for 10 years.
Family disputes and divorce usually have implications on the matrimonial home, and Lesley can also draw on expertise in conveyancing, which means she does not necessarily need to refer her clients to someone else.
However, if help is needed, she can refer to three other women in business at the firm: her colleagues, partner Victoria Hopgood (commercial and residential property), Amanda May (wills and probate, trusts and inheritance tax planning) and Carina Denness  (residential conveyancing, and relocation work).
They are part of a team which includes two other partners, Julian Dickins (property work) and Christopher Chidley (commercial and company law).
Dickins Hopgood Chidley has earned a reputation for providing a friendly and efficient service, while still being small enough to retain the personal touch.
