AFTER more than 40 years in the animal feed trade, it seems remarkable people are still discovering FC Cummins and Sons, but almost daily, new customers visit its large store, or telephone for a delivery of everything from horse feed and bedding through to pet supplies.
This year the company, based at Rookery Farm, Curridge, has added a comprehensive range of gardens tools and supplies to the range inside the shop, including composts and herbicides.
“We have introduced the gardening equipment and supplies to meet demand really,” explained partner Hazel Willis. “We would get customers coming into the shop for horse or pet supplies and they would ask if we knew where we could get loppers and so on. So now they can get them here. Certainly they are proving popular as people move back out into the garden now spring is on the way.
“The changing seasons have also seen a surge in the number of people asking us for chicken feed. We carry a wide range, including organic feeds, and now that hens are more likely to lay people are investing in their own flocks and need quality feed to ensure they get good eggs. We also sell all the feed and water containers and feed bins too.”
The popularity of horses in West Berkshire means FC Cummins and Sons carries a wide range of horse supplies and stock all the leading equine and animal feed manufacturers: Allen & Page, Dodson & Horrell, Dengie, Spillers, Baileys, Westaway H’hage, Hilton Herbs, and Blue Chip.
It offers similar choice in terms of pet supplies for cats and dogs including the well known brands: Chudleys, James Wellbeloved, Hills, Pedigree, Bakers, Butchers, Omega, Whiskas, Felix and more.
Hazel Willis added: “We also have forage and bedding available and we also stock everything for smaller pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs.
“People love the choice, but another reason that customers use us is because we deliver – on Tuesday to Friday, and normally within 48 hours of receiving the order and often much sooner. Of course with us only being two miles north of Newbury on the B4009 many people prefer to visit Rookery Farm, not least as we also carry a stock of equine supplements and hardware supplies.
“We are always very competitive on price too. Our location here on the farm means we do not have the overheads of town centre stores and we can pass on those savings to our customers.”
The store at FC Cummins & Sons is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and from 9am to 5pm on Saturday.
